About

Bungie created Halo and Destiny and runs the studio's official Twitch channel. Founded in Chicago in 1991, the company is based in Bellevue, Washington.[1][2]

Early games and the Xbox years

Alex Seropian founded the company and later brought in programmer Jason Jones after publishing his game Minotaur: The Labyrinths of Crete. Seropian had created Gnop!, a free Pong clone, in 1990; Operation: Desert Storm followed in 1991. Bungie went on to develop the Marathon and Myth series for Macintosh.[3]

Microsoft bought Bungie in 2000, and Halo: Combat Evolved became an Xbox launch title. The studio released Halo 2 in 2004 and Halo 3 in 2007, then separated from Microsoft in October 2007. Microsoft kept ownership of Halo.[3]

Destiny publishing and Sony ownership

A 2010 publishing deal with Activision led to Destiny in 2014 and Destiny 2 in 2017. In January 2019, Bungie announced it was ending that partnership and would take over publishing Destiny.[3]

Sony Interactive Entertainment completed its acquisition of the studio on July 15, 2022.[4]
