About
The Evolution Championship Series, known as Evo, brings fighting-game players together in open tournaments.[1] Competitors play in double-elimination brackets, leaving a tournament after losing two sets.[2]
Battle by the Bay and the move to Las Vegas
The series began with Battle by the Bay, where 40 players gathered in Sunnyvale, California, in 1996. They competed in Super Street Fighter II Turbo and Street Fighter Alpha 2. The Evolution name was introduced at the 2002 event at UCLA, and Evo moved to Las Vegas in 2005. The first Las Vegas event took place at Green Valley Ranch.[3]
Evo Online, planned for July 2020 after the pandemic cancelled the Las Vegas event, was cancelled that month.[4][5] Sexual misconduct accusations had been made against chief executive Joey Cuellar; the board removed him on July 2 and named Tony Cannon interim chief executive, and publishers including Capcom and Bandai Namco withdrew.[4][5]
Recent events and ownership
The Las Vegas event drew 10,244 competitors in 2024.[1]
Evo announced in February 2026 that RTS had acquired the series from NODWIN Gaming.[1]
