About
Michael Rankl, known as Zombey, records Let's Plays of Minecraft and The Binding of Isaac, often with fellow Freedom Squad members Paluten, GermanLetsPlay and Maudado.[1]
The name and the top hat
He began uploading under the name z0mb3yz0ck in November 2010. He took over the existing Zombey channel and began posting there on 14 October 2011 after finding the earlier spelling too difficult.[1] The name came from a shout he and a friend used while playing zombie games. He tried making Let's Plays after wondering how difficult it would be to play and comment at the same time.[2]
His top-hat avatar grew out of an earlier picture of a dog wearing a hat. It depicts a man in a purple top hat and monocle.[2][1] In his 2023 FAQ, he explained that using a facecam made him feel watched and distracted him from playing and commentating.[2]
