About

PirateSoftware is Jason Thor Hall, the founder of game studio Pirate Software and a developer of Heartbound.[1][2]

The RPG follows a boy and his dog. It replaces experience points and character levels with exploration and narrative.[2] His studio first released Champions of Breakfast, an arcade shooter that Hall said took 24 days from concept to launch on Steam.[3]

Development streams and awards

Hall told GameMaker in February 2024 that his streams funded the studio and supplied its translators. Repeated questions from viewers about making games prompted him to create develop.games.[4] He also described running a ferret rescue with its own channel, FerretSoftware, in an AI for Humans interview.[5]

By February 2024, he had won the Streamer Awards prize for Best Software and Game Development; by December that year, he had also won League of Their Own.[4][6] His channel set a Twitch Hype Train record of level 106 on April 1, 2024.[7]

Offbrand Games departure

Hall announced his departure from Ludwig's Offbrand Games in July 2025 after criticism of his opposition to Stop Killing Games. He said the company's games had faced attacks and attempted review bombing, and wished the studio success.[8]
