About
Anthony Fantano is an American music critic who runs The Needle Drop.[1] He reviews albums and songs on a zero-to-ten scale.[2] The Needle Drop won the Beyond the Blog award at the 2011 O Music Awards.[3] Rolling Stone included him among its 25 Most Influential Creators of 2024.[4]
Fantano also discusses music-industry news and interviews guests on his Fantano channel.[1] On Twitch, he reviews and reacts to music with viewers.[5] His reviews feature the comic alter ego Cal Chuchesta.[6] He explained in 2019 that a yellow flannel shirt signalled a positive review and a red one a negative review.[3]
Radio and video reviews
Fantano graduated from Southern Connecticut State University in 2008.[1] He studied liberal studies with concentrations in journalism, political science and communication, and served as music director and general manager of its radio station, WSIN.[3] He began hosting The Needle Drop at Connecticut Public Radio in 2007 and started publishing video reviews in 2009.[2][7]
In October 2017, an article in The Fader accused him of promoting alt-right and antisemitic sentiments in videos on his meme channel, and several dates of his U.S. tour were cancelled after it appeared. Fantano said the videos were satirical; The Fader deleted the article in March 2018, and both sides said the claims were settled.[1]
Fantano curated the charity compilation The Needle Drop LP in 2019. Its profits were donated to the Immigrant Legal Resource Center. That year, he also appeared in the animated music video for the Old Town Road remix.[1]
