About

Mychal Ramon Jefferson, known as Trihex, is an American speedrunner and Twitch streamer whose face appears in the TriHard emote.[1][2][3] He specializes in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.[2][3] He placed third at the 2015 Nintendo World Championships.[1]

Speedrunning

A Speed Demos Archive DVD bundled with Electronic Gaming Monthly introduced him to speedrunning, and he began running Yoshi's Island in 2004. After learning about livestreaming from Narcissa Wright, he broadcast his first stream in February 2011 and moved to Twitch on its launch day later that year.[2]

He ran Yoshi's Island in the 100% category at Awesome Games Done Quick in January 2014.[4] He opened Summer Games Done Quick 2015 with a run lasting 2 hours, 42 minutes and 44 seconds.[5] Tempo Storm announced him as a new member on November 23, 2016.[1]

In 2024, he completed Golden Yoshi's Island in the 100% category in 2:24:13, a run his YouTube channel described as a world record.[6]

Twitch suspended his channel in October 2018 after he used a homophobic slur on stream, and he apologized.[7] He said in 2019 that the suspension also barred him from running at Awesome Games Done Quick 2020.[8]

The TriHard emote

The emote came from a photograph taken at an anime convention in summer 2012. A Twitch staff member chose the name after watching him try to impress staff with difficult gameplay.[2] Chat users also posted the emote to denigrate people of color. He declined to have it removed and said the emote itself was not racist.[2]
